Portugal — where he started

He graduated from Lusíada University in Lisbon in 2004 and practised in a boutique firm handling commercial and company law, credit recovery and real estate — negotiating routinely with municipalities, registration departments and the tax authority. He also did notarial work: wills, contracts and powers of attorney.

Postgraduate study followed in Employment Law at Lusíada, and in Commercial & Business Law at the Catholic University of Lisbon.

Australia — where he practises

He moved to Australia in 2009 and studied through the Legal Profession Admission Board in conjunction with the University of Sydney. He was admitted before the Supreme Court of New South Wales in 2014 and began practising with McCourts Solicitors in Pyrmont that same year.

Bazaliza Lawyers now practises Australia-wide, across property, business transactions, succession and dispute resolution.

Cross-border work

He liaises regularly with Portuguese legal advisers on inheritance, property and business matters, and supports Australian clients investing in Portugal and in Portuguese-speaking countries.

Other Australian firms engage him for advice on Portuguese law. That is unusual, and it is the clearest signal of where his expertise actually sits.

What this means for your purchase

Most Australians buying in Portugal end up with two disconnected advisers — one who understands the contract and one who understands them. Here they are the same person, and he is answerable to you under Australian professional rules.

Outside the practice

Duarte is a father to two daughters. He follows rugby, is passionate about cars and motorsport, and spends what time is left hiking, at the beach, or on road trips with a camera.

Who you are dealing with

Invest Portugal is a service of Bazaliza Lawyers.

Not a referral site, not an agency, and not an introducer taking a commission from the other side of your transaction.

Your matter is opened, run and billed by an Australian law practice in Potts Point — subject to New South Wales professional conduct rules, covered by professional indemnity insurance, and with a complaints path that leads to the Legal Services Commissioner rather than nowhere.
